In our backyard we have all manner of wildlife: squirrels, mice, chipmunks, crows, hawks, wild turkeys, deer, and CHICKENS! The chickens are the only ones we’ve put there on purpose, and as far as backyard livestock, they are the easiest to care for and the best to have around. Every morning these ladies lay an egg and then head outside to scratch around for insects, grass, and whatever we toss in the compost pile. Because they’re free ranging they are able to regulate their own diets and environment. When they get hot they go into the shade and when they are hungry they find new grass to peck around in. They are very friendly and like to visit with our neighbor’s horses and follow us around when we’re working outside. At night, when the sun goes down, they all walk into the coop and hop up on a perch and go to sleep. They really are the easiest farm animal to have around.
We like having the ladies so much that we’ve doubled the size of the flock. These cute baby chicks arrived at Gray Fox Farm this morning. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy my backyard!
